Summary: The countdown clock reads ten days until the end of the world. The citizens are organized. Everyone's been notified and assigned a duty. The problem is . . . no one knows for sure how it will end.

Energy-hungry Mages are the most likely culprit. They travel toward a single location from every corner of the continent. Fueled by the two suns, each Mage holds the power of an element: air, earth, fire, metal, water, or ether. They harness their powers to draw energy from the most readily available resource: humans.

Ashara has been assigned to the Ethereal task force, made up of human ether manipulators and directed by Loken, a young man with whom she has a complicated past. Loken and Ashara bond over a common goal: to stop the Mages from occupying their home and gaining more energy than they can contain. But soon, they begin to suspect that the future of the world may depend on Ashara's death.

Summary: “The Compound bustled with action and anticipation, causing my stomach to do a flip. I stopped in my tracks, realising something, something I hadn't thought of before. We were going to war, and people were going to die.”

The Vanished are the forgotten: those who live beyond law or society. Mina fought for freedom. She fought for a better life – a future. But even a free world can decay.

As Mina begins her new life in the Clans she meets people with surprising knowledge about her power, knowledge that could change everything – even her relationship with Daniel. But as she makes new friends, old friends turn against her in shocking betrayal.

Life in the Compound is tough; there are ways and traditions so strange that Mina begins to suspect foul play at the very heart of her new home. If you’re looking for a steamy romance, a strong, smart heroine and interesting gadgets, this is the book for you! Fate War is a swords and guns, love and war, Steampunk inspired story that is sure to get your pistons pumping.

Short Review (full review to come):

I really loved this book! I couldn't put it down! The characters are complicated and interesting, and the story and world are intriguing.

About this Author:

Who is E.M. Havens? I’m a lot of things. The word that seems to define me most at the moment is mom. It can be all consuming. Not only am I a mom of three (one of them is a teenager…pity me), but I also home-school (pity me more). I share this awesome responsibility with the love of my life, best friend, and soul-mate husband.

Add to that, the twenty-five chickens, twelve turkeys, ten guineas, nine pigs, three barn cats, two Great Pyrenees guardian dogs, a Chihuahua, a house cat, and a goose, it makes for one crazy, full, and certainly entertaining life.

Somewhere in there I find the time to write. I started out young writing poems, then moved on to songs. I actually have a Bachelor in Music with a secondary in Science because I can’t stand English. Yes, the writer hates English. I like to read the story for the experience of reading the story, not to nitpick each letter and comma. But I digress.

I eventually found blogging and really enjoyed sharing my life that way. When an unfortunate turn of events separated me from my music equipment, I decided to use my overactive imagination, my love of reading, and my new found hobby, prose writing, to release some of my creative energy. I wrote my first novel and loved the experience. Fate War: Alliance is actually the second novel I wrote and the first to be published. Now I’m working on my third and several sequels to Fate War!

So that’s pretty much me, sitting in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma, reading, writing, collecting eggs from the coop, and being a schoolmarm. It’s a pretty great life.

Excerpt:

A scream rippled through the emerald-green sea. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” Singleton groaned. I sighed deeply, trying to remain composed. Another scream pierced our ears, this one coming from a different direction. Within seconds the horizon was filled with no less than twenty of the slug-like creatures traveling with chilling military-style precision towards us. They were all swimming from different directions, their eyes flickering in the distance.

“Hyles, leave.”

“No,” I said firmly.

“I'm losing too much blood as it is. I’ll never make it back and who'll avenge my mother? Get out of here. I will not watch you die too! Do it now, Hyles!”

“Would you leave me?” I challenged him, racking my mind for a course of attack.

I gripped my sword awkwardly in my hand as I tried to keep Singleton afloat with the other one. “Hyles, just go or we’ll both die.” The creatures were close enough for us to see their rattling teeth. The combined effect of their screams was enough to shatter our eardrums. “Hyles, go!” he said again. The creatures were no more than eight feet away, and it was clear that neither of us was getting out of here alive.

About these Authors:

Folami and Abeni Morris are a sister-sister writing team. Together they wrote (and rewrote) The Exemeus series, somehow managing to accomplish it without murdering one another. Despite their facial similarities, tendency to finish each other’s thoughts and stick up for each other constantly, no, they’re not twins and thus deserve their own individual bio.

Folami Morris

Folami grew up in the tiny city of San Mateo Ca, where nothing ever happens and no one ever leaves. She went to Xavier University for undergraduate, getting her B.A in physics and her B.S in Biology. After graduation she returned to California, to live in an even smaller city, where even less happens, Antioch Ca. During this time she escaped the monotony by hanging out with her imaginary friends Hyalee and Dephon, and by writing the Exemeus.

She finally escaped to Queens NY and now realizes that quiet and tiny aren’t so bad.

Abeni Morris

As luck (and logic) would have it, Abeni grew up in the same tiny little town as her sister, then she too escaped to the tinier town of Antioch. She has yet to leave. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Cal State East Bay. She is the mom of two amazing kids, who swear that they deserve a percentage of the book proceeds and a ton of the credit. At least she raised dreamers.

Challenge Review: The Strange Case of Finley Jayne by Kady Cross

Genre: Young Adult Fiction, Science Fiction, Steampunk Fiction
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Format: Kindle Edition

Summary: Finley Jayne knows she's not 'normal.' Normal girls don't lose time, or have something inside them that makes them capable of remarkably violent things. Her behavior has already cost her one job, so when she's offered the lofty position of companion to Phoebe, a debutante recently engaged to Lord Vincent, she accepts, despite having no experience. Lord Vincent is a man of science with his automatons and inventions, but Finley is suspicious of his motives where Phoebe is concerned. She will do anything to protect her new friend, but what she discovers is even more monstrous than anything she could have imagined....

Review:

Finley Jayne has just been fired for punching the governess, who slapped the young son of the house and made him cry. She returns home feeling down until she is approached by Lady Morton with a job offer--be a companion for her daughter, Phoebe. Finley was suspicious and reluctant at first, but accepted the offer. She becomes friends with Phoebe and everything seems normal until the night of Phoebe's engagement party. There, Finley meets Lord Vincent, Phoebe's much older fiance. She felt suspicious about him before, but when she learns that she was hired to protect Phoebe from him, she realizes how serious things have become. Finley just needs to learn what he's up to before it's too late for Phoebe.

When reading The Girl in the Steel Corset, we know that Finley was working for Lady August-Raynes. This job with Lady Morton leads Finley to working there. She even warns Finley about Lord Felix. Which makes sense since this is the prequel to The Steampunk Chronicles.

One thing I really liked about The Strange Case of Finley Jayne was the Phoebe and Lady Morton were really accepting of Finley and her strange abilities. I bet it felt real good to be accepted like that. Lord Vincent's little scheme and reasoning for marrying Phoebe were totally creepy--in an obsessive, drowning in grief and guilt way.

It was kind of funny how Griffin, or Lord Greythorne as he's known in this novella, is like this elusive person. Every time he's around, Finley completely misses him, except the time she saw his backside as he was walking out of the chocolate shop. "I don't have a chance with him, either. All I'll have is the memory of his backside." It's almost ironic considering what happens in The Girl in the Steel Corset.

Dare she travel two hundred years into the future to have a 1Night stand with the help of Madame Eve?

Thomas struggles daily to move on after the death of his beloved countess, but being the most highly sought after bachelor of the ton doesn’t allow him much privacy to do so. All he yearns for is a night of lust and fun, with a woman who can make him remember what it feels like to be swept away by passion. Traveling two-hundred years into the future seems to be the perfect solution for both discretion and ease.

What will happen when they discover they didn’t escape their lives at all, but merely found each other?

Review:

Eleanor and Thomas both travel two hundred years into the future for a night of passion, with the help of Madame Eve. Neither of them realize that they come from the same time and place, until they come face-to-face and Eleanor recognizes the man that she has loved from afar for years. It isn't until Eleanor leaves using the time travel device that Thomas realizes that they come from the same time, and when he returns home he'll do anything to find the woman who brought his heart back to life.

I've recently come to really love time travel stories, but Escape to Me is different from the others in that time doesn't keep Thomas and Eleanor apart. Usually there is a heartbreaking realization that the two will never see each other again, and while there is the moment when Eleanor says goodbye and returns home, there is a hopefulness because Thomas is able to follow her back, and he just has to find her again.

I thought it was pretty entertaining how Eleanor kept potentially revealing who she really is by how she would sometimes act and speak, and she does a very good job of pretending to be a "modern woman" to cover up for her slip-of-the-tongue moments. As with a lot of novellas, I really wish that there were more to Thomas and Eleanor's story. For a short story, Escape to Me is a well-written and enjoyable read.

Excerpt:

Heart racing, she towed him to where the wine sat. She’d need to loosen up a bit to fool him into thinking she hailed from this time. Though she should run away without delay, the night carried the possibility of bringing her fantasies to fruition. In this very room, the man she’d pined for, the one she’d yearned to have, stared at her with hunger. Thomas wanted to make love—with her, of all people. Who would’ve guessed it?

“So, Eleanor, tell me, where are you from?” He grabbed the wine, a brow raised as he grabbed the corkscrew to open the bottle. He studied the object, flipping it in his hands, and then put the sharp, twisty blade in the cork.

She could almost hear his thought process as he compared the modern version to the ones they were familiar with. He tossed a smile over his shoulder and poured two glasses. Giving one to her, he motioned for her to sit down on the couch. Once she did so, he sat so close beside her that their legs touched. The heat from his body pressing against hers caused to tremble and almost spill the wine over the rim, even though he’d filled it only three-quarters full.

“I’m from London. My family has an estate out near Devon, but we seldom use it.” Eleanor sipped her beverage, proud of her response. She sounded so…sophisticated. One would never guess she hovered a mere second away from exploding with anxiety. “You?”

“I live far away. I’m in town for a night, and then I return home.”

Now, that was an understatement, if she’d ever heard one. Two hundred years away, to be exact.

She held back a trill of laughter at his perfect reply. Clients were urged not to reveal the truth of their origins. Most people remained unaware of the joys of time-traveling—and the company preferred to keep it that way.

She licked her parched lips. “Oh, is that so? How fortunate for me to have the pleasure of meeting you before you leave.”

He studied her mouth, and her insides clenched at the dark hunger she saw within. How was it possible that he could be so ravenous—for her?

“Indeed, how fortunate. I almost backed out, thinking it silly of me to do something so frivolous. Then, I thought, perhaps it could be an interesting diversion for the night.” He finished his wine, and she hurried to follow suit. He refilled her glass first, then his, before turning to face her. His lips turned up at the corners, and she took another taste to steady her nerves. “I daresay it might end up being much more than a simple distraction.”

Her heart skittered to a stop, and she choked on her wine.

Dear God, does he know who I am?

He set his drink down, plucked her glass out of her grasp, and placed it on the table next to his. His brow crinkled with worry, he pounded on her back. The force behind the blows made her stumble out of the seat, so he gripped her elbows to place her on her feet before repeating the action. She didn’t know which made it harder to get air into her lungs…the wine or his “help.”

She waved at him and croaked, “I’m fine.”

His fingers tightened on her shoulders. “Are you alright, La—Eleanor?”

“You know?” He’d almost called her by her title. How had he figured out the truth? She stared straight ahead, scared to look at him, and stepped out of his arms. “H-How do you know?”

He frowned. “I know? What did I say, Eleanor?”

She realized her lapse in judgment before he finished speaking. He hadn’t known she was a lady—he had just slipped up by addressing her as he was accustomed. She choked on a nervous bubble of laughter. His brow arched, so she coughed to try and disguise her laugh under the after-effect of choking on wine.

He hadn’t the foggiest notion about her true identity. He’d called her Lady out of habit. Not knowledge. Stepping closer, she smiled up at him and brushed a finger down the curve of his jaw. She’d always wanted to do that Always wondered what the stubble on a man’s face might feel like against her skin.

It felt sinfully delicious.

About this Author:

J. A. Huss never took a creative writing class in her life. Some would say it shows. Others might cut her some slack. She did however, get educated and graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Equine Science. She had grand dreams of getting a Ph.D. but while she loves science, she hated academia and settled for a M.S. in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida.

She’s always packing heat and she is owned by two donkeys, five dogs, more chickens and ducks than she can count, and of course, the real filthy animals, her kids. The I Am Just Junco series was born after falling in love with the ugliest part of Colorado and the Rural Republic is based on the area of the state she currently resides in, minus the mutants, of course.

Summary: Some souls are meant to be together, but pursuing true love can be dangerous and often deadly. When sixteen-year-old Madeline falls in love with Samuel, a boy who lives hundreds of years before she is even born, she will risk her very existence to be with him.

She falls in love with a Native boy, Samuel. But, she’s living in the body of a colonial girl and their romance is a crime that carries harsh punishments.

Madeline discovers that she is meant to be a Messenger, a traveler who if properly trained, can slip through time's fabric at will. The Medicine Woman mentors her. But Madeline doesn't fit in this world. She’s different from the other colonists. Rumors of witchcraft and spying arise. Deadly Hunters, dark-souled predators as well as skilled time travelers, crave Madeline's powers. Can Madeline find the way back to her future? And will that future include her one true love, Samuel?

Review:

There are two things I like about science fiction. One is time travel, the other is aliens (the hot kind of aliens, not the little green men kind). But The Messenger involves time travel. Madeline is taken all the way back to 1675 Rhode Island during the King Philip War. She learns that she is a Messenger, she's trained by a Medicine Woman, and finds love with a Native boy named Samuel. But there are those that are after her and her power.

I find time travel stories to be really awesome because of the time travel, but they can also be really sad and heartbreaking, especially if there are two people from different times falling in love and then being separated when one returns to their time. These dynamics are what make science fiction time travel stories, like The Messenger so great. I also really liked the Native legends in The Messenger.

The Messenger is a gripping tale that I really want more of!

Summary: Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents , dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring...until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

Your heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

Review:

Katy Swartz moved to Ketterman, West Virginia from Florida and into the house next door to Dee and Daemon Black. While Dee goes out of her way to become Katy's friend, Daemon couldn't be more rude. He may be hotter than the Sahara Desert, but his personality is colder than Antarctica. After a number of strange happenings, Katy discovers why Daemon acts the way her does, and his secret could very well put Katy in life-threatening danger.

Like Lesa says, "Holy Hawt Chemistry, Batman!" The tension and chemistry between Daemon and Katy is explosive! They may fight constantly, but there is no denying the attraction they feel for each other. Some of the more steamy scenes left me swooning, while their banter had me laughing out loud. I do have to say that I liked that Katy didn't give in to Daemon's "I think" and "I kind of" reasoning for them to be together. That she won't commit to a relationship with someone who isn't 100% certain they want to be with her.

I absolutely loved the lunchroom scene with the spaghetti and Ash. That's definitely a way to deal with a person who's treating you badly for no apparent reason. Katy gained quite the reputation as "The Girl Who Dumped Her Food on Them." What a way to start out at a new school.

Jennifer L. Armentrout has an original take on aliens in the Lux series. The Luxen are made of light and energy, and their planet Lux, which literally means light in Latin, was destroyed by the Arum, Latin for dark. So we actually have a battle between light and dark forces.

The Luxen traveled to Earth when their planet was destroyed and took up residence here. This fact makes the Luxen's view of humans really annoying, because it's like they're the visitors here and have no right to treat humans the way they do. Their behavior just makes them seem ungrateful, although I can see how being hounded by the Department of Defense could make them dislike the human race.

I really admired Katy's strength in the face of the Arum and her determination to protect Dee and Daemon form them. She definitely proved that she wasn't weak or a liability to the Luxen. This does lead to a strange connection between Katy and Daemon, though. I can't wait to see what this connection means for them in the next book.

I always wondered about the hype surrounding Jennifer L. Armentrout and her Lux series. After reading Obsidian, I have been enlightened to the awesomeness that is JLA. I loved Obsidian from the very first page, and was desperate for the next book in the series. So I actually used some of my book savings to buy Onyx. I'm so excited, I can't wait to continue the story.
